Study on Fuel Debris Disposal at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station

Background

On March 2011, at Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Station (NPS) emergency cooling system was failed due to the mega earth quake and the following big tsunami, which caused core fuel to melt down. For decontamination of Fukushima Dai-ichi NPS, it needs to dispose of fuel debris which mixed some of molten fuel and core structures. The disposal method of fuel debris is still not decided, since fuel debris should be studied for safety disposal.

Outcome

The simulated fuel debris sample are prepared by mixing UO2 powder and core structure material and heat treated on the various condition. In the future, I will study on the simulated debris disposal dissolution behavior of radionuclides from the simulated fuel debris under deep subsurface environment.
