Development of photofunctional molecules using photo-induced excited states
Background
Light-contol of cellular functions allows for artificial control of biological activities at sub-cellular and high-definition spatio-temporal scales (sub-msec, sub-micron). We have been investigating the intracellular utilization of subsequent chemical reactions triggered by the formation of excited states upon photo irradiation of molecules.
Outcome
To utilize light-induced molecularly excited states to effectively induce selective oxidation-reduction reactions in cells, and to apply them to phototherapy. To establish methods to regulate mitochondrial function by precisely controlling the degree of oxidation and reduction by light.
