Development of laser-driven particle accelerators

研究の背景 Background

Contribution of particle accelerators to the modern basic science, industry, and medicine is invaluable. From keV to GeV electron and hadron accelerators become ingrained in society everyday lives. However in recent years, accelerator development is continuously growing with new demands for higher energy and currents, for beams in femtosecond and atto-second ranges, for nanometer scaling and high fields. New solutions in the way of miniaturization of ordinary accelerators, which are typically national facility level and require a huge amount of the cost and huge location areas, are under developing with novel acceleration mechanisms exploiting ultra-high electric fields.

研究の目標 Outcome

Laser wakefield acceleration (LWFA) is one of the rapidly developed scientific fields for the last decade, providing potentially jitter-free compact GeV-class electron sources. To realize that, we are working to solve several key technical problems in our laboratory. We are improving our laser system to be more powerful, stable and controllable. We are developing new targets like specially designed gas-jet, pulse driven discharge capillary to control and optimize the plasma wakefield. We are developing the components for the electron beam transport and focus to realize staging wakefield acceleration. Step by step, we are improving laser wakefield accelerators with higher energy and better stability, for practical applications.
