Mechanisms of the behavior of unicellular microorganisms

Background

Protists, which is eukaryotic unicellular microorganisms, account for most of the diversity of eukaryotic organisms according to a recent analysis of genomic information. These microorganisms have a significant effect on the earth’s environment. To elucidate the mechanisms of the behavior of protists, which have been still unclear, is essential to understand the earth’s climate.

Outcome

To contribute to understanding the earth’s environment, we elucidate the mechanisms of the behaviors of protists. Protists exhibit various types of acts so that we use proper methods, including cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, image analysis, fluid mechanics, statistical mechanics, and so on.

研究図Research Figure

Fig.1. The sliding behavior of Paramecium caudatum

(a) A kind of ciliates, P. caudatum, slide on a wall, and this behavior is advantageous to survive in nature because sufficient nutrients are accumulated near the wall. (b, c) The sliding behavior was simulated via numerical simulation. (d) We can also expect the behavior of ciliates according to their shape and the mechanosensing feature of cilia. All figures were modified from Nishigami (Commun. Integr. Biol., 11, e1506666 (2018)).
