Synthesis, structure analysis and characterization of new multinary inorganic compounds

Background

Wide fields of inorganic compounds consisting of various elements are still uncultivated, and multinary compounds having unknown crystal structures and properties may lie hidden. Development of new synthetic methods is important for the preparation of the new compounds. The knowledge obtained by the discovery of the new compounds is valuable heritage which will support material science in the next generation.

Outcome

New multinary inorganic compounds, such as ternary and quaternary oxides, nitrides, and Zintl compounds have been synthesized by a newly developed method using melts of active metals as well as by conventional synthetic methods. Their crystal structures have been clarified by X-ray diffraction, and their properties such as electrical and ionic conductions, photoluminescence, and thermoelectric power generation have been characterized.

研究図Research Figure

Fig.1. Crystal structures of MgBa4[Si2N6]. The compound consist of edge-sharing SiN4 tetrahedra of isolated nitridosilicate anions [Si2N6]10−. Mg2+ cations are planar- rectangularly coordinated by four nitrogen atoms.Fig.2. Crystal structure of Li2B3PO8. The sheets of ∞2[B3PO8]2− formed by the linkage of triangular BO3 and tetrahedral BO4 and PO4 groups stack along the b-axis direction.Fig.3. Projective view of the crystal structure of Li2NaBP2O8 along the a axis. One-dimensional ∞1[BP2O8]3− chains are formed in the direction of the c axis by linkage of the four-membered rings composed of two PO4 and two BO4 tetrahedra.
